Cleaning tips for your iron

An iron needs to be cleaned frequently because if it isn't, grime, starch residues, and mineral deposits from water can build up. These accumulations can reduce the iron's efficiency and result in brown or yellow stains on clothing. An dirty iron may potentially present a fire risk.

Here are some cleaning ideas for an iron:

  • The iron should first be unplugged from the power source and left to cool.

  • Fill the water reservoir with equal parts water and white vinegar to flush out any water and mineral buildup. Give it 20 to 30 minutes to sit.

  • Remove any dirt or debris from the soleplate by wiping it off with a moist cloth or sponge.

  • For tough stains, apply a paste of baking soda and water to the soleplate and use a sponge or brush to scrub the stains.

  • Using microfiber cloth, apply a mixture of baking soda and water to the soleplate and use a sponge or brush to remove any tough stains; a damp towel should be used to clean the iron's handle, buttons, and cord.

  • Drain the water reservoir and repeatedly rinse it with fresh water.

  • Fill the reservoir with fresh water again followed by running the iron for a few minutes on the highest setting to get rid of any leftover debris or vinegar.

  • Remove all of the water from the reservoir, then dry it with a clean cloth.

  • Store the iron in a dry place with the soleplate facing up to prevent rust.

  • You may want to clean your iron at least once a month.
